Image Description
The Nativity of The Mother of God is one of the twelve major feast days of the eastern church and actually starts the liturgical year. The composition of this icon has its foundation in Byzantine art on the basis of the apocryphal legend recounted in the Gospel of Saint James. Joachim and Anna at an advanced age had no children and an angel of God appeared simultaneously to both of them announcing the coming birth of a Child blessed by God. In this icon Saint Anne is pictured on a couch as her attendants serve her. To the right of the icon. Saint Anne is pictured again alongside Saint Joachim as they adore the newborn Virgin Mary. At the bottom of the scene, two attendants prepare a bath for the infant Mary.
